A story of vines and terroir
At the heart of our champagnes are the soil and the vines that belong to Nathalie and her family. 16 acres of Chardonnay, firmly rooted in the limestone soil of the Côte des Blancs and the Côteaux du Sézannais. Before us there was Nicolas, Adélaïde, Jules and Aline, Henri and Élise, Paul and Marie-Louise, Jean and Marie Paule... who built the magnificent facilities we have today, the legacy of nine generations of winegrowers. Through our champagnes, we wish to pay tribute to this terroir, which gives the wines their character. Of that, there can be no doubt. Plots that have been carefully selected for their soil, for their advantageous orientation, or sometimes for their history, have enabled us to create a range of wines with a strong identity, more linked to their qualities than to our oenological objectives.
A story of friendships
But Champagne J.Vignier also has another story to tell. The story of a meeting between two men in the middle of the last century, when a reunited Europe was in the process of being built. A meeting between a Frenchman named Paul, and a German named Rudolf, who became and remained friends until the end of their lives. Today, we are Paul’s grandchildren, and Rudolf’s great-nephew. Winegrowers in Cramant, and an oenologist and biologist, but first and foremost, friends.
×
Planted between 1950 and 2010, our vineyards are deeply rooted in the chalky slopes of the communes of Cramant, Oiry and Chouilly, all of which are Grand Cru Classés on the Côte des Blancs. Continuing about 50 km to the south, the hills of Sézannais offer a different terroir and a richer more generous climate.
Several years ago, on selected plots, we undertook the creation of authentic “terroir wines”: wines that reflect a special harmony between the soil type, the climate and Chardonnay: the grape variety that rules supreme in these unique landscapes. The wines that result from this patient, meticulous work are vinified and aged simply and straightforwardly, with a minimal dosage after disgorging.

JVignier
Nathalie Vignier is a 10th generation grower based in Cramant, making delicious wines with her collaborator Sebastian Nickel and her brother Jean. The wines under the JVignier label are all top-notch, particularly the Silexus Sezannensis from the Côte de Sézanne, the parcellaire Les Longues Verges from Cramant and the Cuvée Éphémère (abbreviated QVFMR), which changes every year.
J.Vignier Les Longues Verges Grand Cru Extra Brut 2012
Superbly elegant. Initial aromas of green apple and toasted brioche. Approachable and seductively textured on the palate, the fine bubbles give a creamy feel that lasts through the lingering finish. Fruit for the bottling comes from “Les Longues Verges” in a parcel that overlaps Cramant and neighbouring Chouilly. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged five years on the lees before giving a very low dosage, producing a delightfully clean and crisp result. Drink 2020 – 2030.
Specialities hitting the market
This category covers special non-vintage bottling – such as plot selections or undosed wines – born of champagne producers’ inventiveness and love of experimenting, as well as top wines that demonstrate a particularly highly developed art of blending.
Champagne J.Vignier Deux Terres Blanc de Blancs
A complex, particularly mineral nose with herbal touches, intense in the attack, dense structure, exceptionally spirited and hugely lingering, an immensely characterful wine for connoisseurs, one of the most idiosyncratic champagnes of all.
Champagne J.Vignier Ora Alba Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs
Interesting mature aromas of vanilla, pastry, green Mirabelle plum and herbs, elegant in the attack, with slender yet dense development, hugely fresh, pleasantly lingering, sophisticated. Uncontrived, honest, straightforward, refined and characterful.
Champagne J.Vignier Silexus Sezannensis Blanc de Blancs
A wonderfully complex dried herb, fresh fruit and lime nose with mineral touches, crystal clear in the attack, slender structure, elegant, spirited, hugely fresh and lingering, exceptionally made, good with fried freshwater fish.
Champagne J.Vignier Aux Origines Blanc de Blancs
Reticent herb and green hazelnut nose, crystal clear in the attack, a slender and fresh structure, good length; the most accessible J.Vignier wine, a characterful aperitif.
Vinum World of Champagne 2020
Nathalie Vignier is the tenth generation of her family to grow grapes in Champagne, and the sixth in her village of Cramant. In team with her family friend Sebastian Nickel, their substantial estate spans 16.5 hectares, planted exclusively to chardonnay in Cramant, Oiry and Chouilly and the Coteaux du Sézannais... These are generous champagnes, built around ripe fruit, vinified in stainless steel vats with full malolactic fermentation and aged long on lees, with little need for dosage, and all are bottled at an extra-brut level of 5g/L.
J. Vignier Deux Terres Brut 2008
92 points; Disgorged September 2016; Tasted in Australia
100% chardonnay from two plots, one in Cramant for vivacity, and one in Barbonne-Fayel south of Sézanne for roundness and breadth; aged 8 years on lees; 5g/L dosage; formerly named ‘Cuvée 2008’; 3500 bottles
The ripe exuberance of J. Vignier is neatly juxtaposed by the tension of the 2008 harvest. There is a compelling generosity here that contrasts ripe white peach fruit with a panoply of layers of aged complexity: golden fruit cake, fruit mince spice, wild honey and brioche. Eight years on lees has built buttery, creamy structure, well countered on the finish with a touch of bitter grapefruit bite.
Extract from the Champagne Guide Tyson Stelzer 2020 - 2021
“Deux Terres, two worlds, or more specifically their wines, come together and are combined into a characterful whole in this cuvee : The Côte des Blancs and neighbouring Sézannais, a region that is perhaps finally gaining the recognition it deserves.”
Champagner 2019 - Vinum
After diligent consideration, we have taken the decision to baptise our vintage champagne and giving it a name like all our other cuvees. Henceforth, this wine that some of you know as being simply labelled “2008”, will proudly bear its history and origin as cuvee “Deux Terres” (Two Terroirs).
To make this champagne, two vineyards, two terroirs were chosen in 2008: One in Cramant at the Côte des Blancs, the other in Barbonne-Fayel at the Coteaux du Sézannais. Both vineyards are genetically connected through a mass selection done by our mother Marie-Paule in 1967. She actually selected shoots from the vineyard in Cramant and grafted them to plant the vineyard in Barbonne-Fayel. To date, this is the only champagne where we blend those two origins.
Despite the changing of the name, this wine will always be crafted in exact accordance to the traditions of vintage champagne: A single vintage, without reserve wines, only made in years that come up with grapes of exceptional quality in both the Côte des Blancs and the Coteaux du Sézannais.
2018 gave us a lucky harvest. After a vigorous and snowy winter, continuing alternation between abundant rain and sunshine marked spring. Some thunderstorms and hail approached the Côte des Blancs and the Coteaux du Sézannais in May, but except some light leaf damage, none of our vines or grapes were harmed. Mildew was a major problem at that period, but it seemed to be under control at the beginning of the warm and dry summer. Drought was compensated by the huge ground water reserves stored in the chalky sub soils that act like a sponge, supplying water to the plants and the grapes until optimum ripeness was achieved.
This year’s harvest was very early, as we started to pick the firs grapes on August 28th. Grapes were tasty and healthy, showing good balance between sugars and acidity, as well as crisp citrus flavours and aromas of pears, apples and some spices. Fermentations went along without any problems and malos are under way. We expect a beautiful vintage, where all of our vineyards will fully express their peculiar character. To our greatest satisfaction, the wines from the Coteaux du Sésannais, “Silexus Sézannensis” and “Les Abbesses”, are already keeping up with the most precious Grand Cru terroirs we cultivate at the Côte des Blancs.
Champagne J.Vignier - Ora Alba Grand Cru Blanc de blancs – Cramant, Chouilly, Oiry
A wine that exhales terroir, with a strong presence of chalk and white flowers, cedar and lemongrass. Full-bodied, with beguiling and lasting minerality. Freshness on the palate, as well as a creamy structure and citrus aromas lead to a long finish. It keeps its promise / generous. Perfectly fitting dish: Carpaccio of Mediterranean Mackerel.
Champagne J.Vignier - Silexus Sezannensis Blanc de blancs – Vineyard selections from Saudoy, Coteaux du Sézannais
A concentrated, smoky nose, tenderized by white flowers. Lots of power on the palate, with earthy minerality, chalky rocks and a salty, very long finish. Intense! Matches to grilled fish.
Champagne J.Vignier - Les Longues Verges Grand Cru - single vineyard selection from Cramant and Chouilly
Introverted and mysterious, with a beautiful, mineral depth, lots of floral scent, tangerine and lemon, slightly oxidative apple notes and hazelnuts on the finish. A little less expressive on the palate, but tangerine and lemon aromas are still present, in a slightly softer version. To fresh pasta, Parmesan and sage.
Champagne J.Vignier - Deux Terres (Millésime 2008) - Assemblage of two single vineyards in Cramant and Barbonne-Fayel
It takes some patience, but it’s well worth the wait for the wine to reach its full potential: ripe fruits, white and yellow flowers, citrus fruits ... A bouquet that is becoming ever more extravagant, deep and sensual at the same time. The somewhat less pronounced minerality on the palate may surprise, but the wine is still supported by a straightforward acidity and fascinates with its unexpectedly mature and slightly oxidative character.
The annual “Big Bordeaux Tasting” organized by VINUM is less strict than the title suggests, as it opens its doors to some other appellations. This year, on Monday, June 4th, vigneronne Nathalie Vignier and winemaker Sebastian Nickel will be in Zürich to propose the J.Vignier wines for tasting: Pure Blanc de blancs Champagne from various Grand Cru locations in the Côte des Blancs, as well as from the mysterious Coteaux du Sézannais. A young champagne brand from a traditional winery based in Cramant since 1936. Champagne J.Vignier is not yet represented in Switzerland. We are looking forward to meet you!
More information about the event can be found here.
Challenge international du Vin
Champagne J.Vignier – Les Longues Verges
A bouquet offering particular transparency and purity, with discreet green melon notes and a hint of golden fruit, immensely transparent and airy on the palate, with almost extreme minerality, slender but very long; we have rarely tasted so much terroir in a sparkling wine. Impressive!
Champagne J.Vignier – Silexus Sézannensis
In transparent, mineral and decidedly straightforward style, reticent, slender and long, offering impressive personality; serve with freshwater fish. We like the excitement, lenght and very individual character of this multi-site wine.
Champagne J.Vignier – Ora Alba
The bouquet has fruity overtones with Mirabelle plum and golden apple aromas, and an impression of ripeness and roundness also dominates on the palate, although there is also no lack of minerality; we are big fans of this house’s wines thanks to its authenticity and purity.
Add some bubbly to your happiest occasions with a glass poured from one of these elegant vintages.
NUMBER 2: J. Vignier 2008 Millésime Brut
2008 Millésime Brut
Says sommelier Alicia Kemper, who is the wine director at Fundamental LA: “Nathalie Vignier is a 10th-generation winemaker in Champagne, and a 6th-generation maker in Cramant (a Grand Cru village). Her grandfather, Paul LeBrun, had 2 hectares in the early 20th century and became one of the very first independent vignerons after World War I. She has kept the pioneer spirit alive and creates wine that is full of energy, and she has many little experimental projects brewing. The 2008 is one of the best recent vintages in Champagne and is showing beautifully right now. This one has tension, focus, and elegant aromas of honeysuckle, chamomile, and lemon.”
From Robb Report - Food and Drink
Located in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, the family has been cultivating wine for more than ten generations. First own Champagne brand 1902. Paul Lebrun founds his own champagne house in 1931. Today, his grandchildren, Nathalie and Jean Vignier cultivate 16.5 hectares of Chardonnay around Cramant and in the Sézannais (Récoltant Manipulant).
A ripe Blanc de blancs: fermented in steel tanks, a blend of wines from 2008 to 2010. Straw colored, with intense brioche and roast notes, showing nuances of caramel and butter after some opening time. This champagne combines a medium-bodied taste and fresh acidity, showing good potential. Enjoy between 2017 and 2022.
Champagne J.Vignier “Ora Alba” Grand Cru Blanc de blancs
Light golden colour with a green hue and mild mousseux. Open nose, some evolution and complexity, fresh butter, roasted nuts, yellow stone fruit and ripe citrus. Good bite and grip on the palate, bone dry with good balance, fresh and integrated acidity with a mild creaminess and a long lingering finish.
Champagne J.Vignier Silexus Sézannensis Blanc de blancs
Bright light golden colour with a lively mousseux. Generous nose, displaying tropical fruit like mango, peach, saffron almond paste and some brioche. The palate is bright and fresh, medium weight and rather dry towards Extra Brut, youthful but balanced in a generous vinous style with good grip and length.
Champagne J.Vignier “Les Longues Verges” Grand Cru Blanc de blancs
Bright light golden colour with young lively mousse. The nose is roasted with nutty notes, melted butter, yellow fruit, citrus and vanilla, probably a hint of oak. Medium bodied, rather vinous with a creamy texture, bright freshness, attractive fruit, some brioche and butter on the finish with good length and nutty finish.

The family has been cultivating vines in Cramant for six generations. Today, the estate covers 16.5 hectares of vineyards in Cramant, Oiry and Chouilly, as well as in the Sézannais (Saudoy), all planted between 1950 and 2010. The estate produces two different brands. The brand named after the grandfather Paul Lebrun includes the traditional champagne of the family. In addition, there is the new brand J. Vignier, producing single vineyard champagne. One of them comes from a vineyard in the Coteaux du Sézannais, planted with a mass selection from Cramant. The wines of J.Vignier are all fermented in stainless steel with an Extra Brut dosage.
The cuvee Ora Alba Brut Grand Cru comes from Cramant, Oiry and Chouilly. It’s made of 70 percent reserve wines from 2008 and contains 30 percent of wines from 2009 and 2010 and ages on fine lees for at least four years. It shows a lot of spiciness, restrained fruit, it’s compact, powerful, takes some time to open up.
The Silexus Sezannensis is a pure Chardonnay (like all the wines of J.Vignier) from the area of Chatet in Saudoy. It’s a pure 2011 harvest and also ages for at least four years on yeast. It shows fine spiciness, is powerful, compact and clear, possesses good substance.
The Les Longues Verges Brut Grand Cru entirely made from a single vintage, comes from a vineyard of the same name, which is located partly in Cramant, partly in Chouilly. It shows fine spiciness, discreetly white fruits, is powerful, stuffy and grippy, very youthful.
The Brut Millésimé 2008 comes partly from Cramant, partly from the Sézannais and has been aged on fine lees for seven years. It shows a lot of spiciness, discreet smoky notes, is compact, powerful, but somehow reserved, possesses good substance and structure.
At Vinexpo Bordeaux, you can taste the Cuvees of Champagne J.Vignier together with Sebastian Nickel on Sunday the 18th and Monday the 19th of June. Fancy a 100% Chardonnay Champagne? Come to the stand «100% Blind Tasted» by Adreas Larsson, World best Sommelier in 2007, Hall 1 stand C339.
This annual wine tasting, organized by the wine magazine VINUM, is less strict in its subject than the title may suggest and opens its doors to a few other appellations. This year, you will meet here Nathalie Vignier and Sebastian Nickel who offer their Champagne J.Vignier for tasting. Pure Chardonnay wines, from different areas of the Côte des Blancs and the Coteaux du Sézannais.

Ora Alba Grand Cru Blanc de blancs
The most aromatic of the quartet, fruity, juicy, well built, good length, without frills, with personality and of great purity. To fish.
Silexus Sézannensis Blanc de blancs
Reticent mineral and herbal notes together with a touch of thyme, then slender, hugely exciting and wonderfully long on the palate with a very pure, viturally crystaline style; interesting because it is an impressive illustration of Chardonnay from Sézannais. With freshwater fish.
Les Longues Verges Grand Cru Blanc de blancs
Reticent, mineral spice, a wine as if chiselled from a block of stone, straightforward, crystal clear, uncomplicated with a long green apple finish; a wonderful wine for connoisseurs, best enjoyed with food and fish. Magnificent.
Millésime 2008 Blanc de blancs
A reticent, spicy bouquet of green apple and starfruit, juicy on the palate with bite and spirit, crisp and long with stewed apple notes. Could still be left to age. A characterful champagne.
VINUM Champagne special December 2016
Behind top-quality terroir wines stands an enterprising woman with vision and a true German-French friendship.
"I was only two years old when my father expanded his cellar in 1972, and one of the first words I learned to say was ‘crane’. Now there is one in front of the house, and a new cellar is being constructed; my own son is two years old. Building expansion is a family tradition and cranes are part of my life – my first job was in the customer service department of Demag Cranes in London. When the group changed ownership and my parents needed me at home, I returned to Cramant. That was in 1994. I initially moved away because I did not want to follow in my parents’ footsteps, but apparently destiny had other ideas! Nevertheless, I quickly realised that the work was much more exciting than I wanted to admit.
The Vigniers are six generations of winegrowers and winemakers in Cramant. Every generation has expanded the operation, and now we have 16.5 hectares of vineyards. Yes, yards – I consider the personal scale of the term very important, as a lot of our work is still performed by hand: all of our 140,000 bottles were riddled by hand until 2008, with the process only converted when our riddler retired.
We produce two ranges: Champagne Paul Lebrun (the name of my grandfather) is the traditional range for our loyal old clientele. Quality is also not in question. We recently relaunched the J.Vignier brand, reserved for large and small cuvees, including a wine from our vineyard in lesser known Sézannais which we planted with massal selections of vines from Cramant.
My grandfather befriended a German prisoner of war who was working here. He returned to Germany after the war, but visited us regularly. His great nephew Sebastian Nickel (top right) is now a member of my staff and the co-initiator of the J.Vignier project."
Visual aspect: pale golden hue. Nose: Very floral (lime tree, verbena). Beautiful minerality with a mentholated finish. Palate: A fine palate with a delicate elegance. Very fine sparkling on the palate. Food & wne pairings: Langoustine carpaccio with citrus coating. Comment: A terroir Champagne. A very good achievement. One of the favourites.
Sommeliers International - November 2016
×In the production of our “Terroir” Champagne we find our balance, our style. Our choice for these wines is based on a selection of vineyards where we only grow Chardonnay. Every year the wines are produced according to a simple and respectful protocol, to emphasize the pure character of the fruit and its origin: fermentation exclusively of the first pressing in stainless steel tanks, malolactic fermentation and Dosage Extra Brut (5 g / L) for all wines.
A Champagne Grand Cru coming from our father’s vineyards in Cramant, Oiry and Chouilly. Here we grow only Chardonnay on soils of pure chalk.
Fresh on the nose, with flavors of apples and lemon, as well as hints of peaches. Tasty and smooth, this wine has a real texture, due to its fine bubbles and mineral acidity, as typical for the wines from the Côte des Blancs. On the palate, it evolves towards brioche-like, buttery and toasty flavors, with a touch of thyme and grapefruit on the final.
This wine loves to accompany sushi or sashimi, a sole ceviche, a Carpaccio of sea bream or any other kind of raw fish.

In the vineyards of Chatet, close to Saudoy, you will find quite some pieces of silex. That’s very rare and their presence has a great influence on grape ripening. At daytime the stones are heated up by the sun, giving warmth to the vines at night.
This wine has power and finesse. In the nose you will find flower and citrus aromas, as well as the sweet smell of ripe melons and apples. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, with a high density of fine bubbles. Besides its fruitiness, this wine has something wild with its character. Something that will remind you of stony soils, spices and white pepper. We prefer to savour it in white wine glasses rather than in champagne flutes, in order to give this wine the space to develop. You should open the bottle half an hour before tasting or even decant it.
Due to the power of its taste and flavors, this wine neither fears crayfish and lobster nor cheese with a strong character like Mont d’Or or Soumaintrain.

We only make vintage Champagne in exceptional years. The grapes of this wine, by the way the favourite wine of Jean Vignier, come from two selected vineyards: One in Cramant, one in the Sézannais. The two vineyards are genetically connected to each other. When planting the vineyard in the Sézannais, we took woods from our healthiest vines in Cramant to make a mass selection. So this wine somehow reunifies mother and daughter.
While its vivid, mineral acidity comes from the chalky soils of Cramant, the power and smoothness of this Champagne clearly comes from the Sézannais. On the palate, the wine is juicy and ample, showing creamy texture and fine bubbles, as well as flavors of apricot and peaches, lemon peel, cinnamon and dried fruits on the final. It perfectly stands on its own, but you may also enjoy it as an appetizer with some sweet “Biscuits de Reims” or Parmesan crisps.

This wine comes from the chalky soils of a single vineyard called “Les Longues Verges”. Protected by woods and exposed to the north-west, it is situated on the border between Cramant and Chouilly, two Villages Grand Crus from the Côte des Blancs. The name refers to an ancient agricultural measure, corresponding to 1276 m2.
Only made from Chardonnay, the LV is unique and imposing. Pure and mineral, this wine knows how to link power to elegance, complexity to concentration and strength to finesse. It demands your entire attention, imposes silence as well as screaming, requires caviar but may also be satisfied by a piece of original old parmesan cheese. Please notice: It also perfectly matches to a rainy night in Paris…
